Whiting once housed German POWs

NAVAL AIR STATION WHITING FIELD, Fla. – Whiting Field has been an integral part of the nation’s defense for three-quarters of a century, first as an Auxiliary Air Station and then as a Naval Air Station. But one of its lesser-known roles was housing German prisoners of war in the closing months of World War II. The prisoners were sent to Whiting from Fort Rucker, Ala., and were used to help complete the installation’s framework. (Source: Whiting Tower, 08/25/17)
