Drones inspecting power lines

MILTON, Fla. - Gulf Power has started using drones to inspect its power lines. Some line workers are being trained as drone pilots to get pictures or video of structures that are difficult to see. Gulf Power's parent company, the Southern Company, started investigating drones for power line work in 2015, according to spokeswoman Kimberly Blair. Gulf Power started using the unmanned aerial vehicles this year. Recently they were used to inspect the new lines that are part of the Gulf Coast Solar Center projects at Naval Air Station Whiting Field and Pensacola, Saufley and Holley Outlying Fields and Eglin Air Force Base.
